This document is the entry coupon (Volet d' Entrée) from an international Carnet de Passages en Douane—a customs passport for a privately owned automobile traveling across national borders. A Carnet de Passages served much the same purpose for a motor vehicle as a passport does for a traveler. Issued by an authorized automobile association—in this case the Deutscher Touring-Club of Munich—it certified the ownership and identity of the vehicle and guaranteed that customs duties would be paid if the automobile was not re-exported. When entering a foreign country, customs officials removed or stamped one of these detachable entry coupons as proof that the vehicle had been admitted temporarily without payment of import duties. This example was issued for a Chrysler passenger automobile and records numerous identifying details, including the chassis and engine numbers, horsepower, body style, color, seating capacity, weight, value, tire information, and national registration number. It bears Swiss revenue stamps and customs cancellations dated 5 August 1931, documenting the vehicle's entry into Switzerland. The carnet itself remained valid until 8 June 1932, allowing the owner to cross multiple international borders during that period while avoiding repeated customs deposits at each frontier. Before modern international customs agreements simplified cross-border travel, Carnets de Passages were essential documents for motorists touring Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Today they provide a fascinating record of early automobile tourism, preserving detailed information about individual vehicles and documenting their international journeys through official customs stamps and endorsements.
