What it is

Fitted into the underside of a base it grips a steel sheet across its whole face, which is what keeps a model upright rather than merely attached.

470 g is the point where transport stops being a worry. A 28mm infantry model on a steel-lined tray will not shift on a motorway, and a larger model on a 40 mm or 50 mm base can be carried with two of these spaced apart. It is also enough for heavier jobs away from basing — cast metal parts, removable terrain sections, display plinths.

One caution up front, because it matters more at this strength than at any smaller size: a magnet this strong can be stronger than the glue joints on the model itself. See the basing section below.

Basing miniatures with this size

The usual arrangement is a magnet recessed into the underside of the base, meeting a steel sheet lining the transport tray or case. Magnet against steel is easier to live with than magnet against magnet: there is no polarity to get wrong, models can be placed in any orientation, and the hold is still firm.

▪ Small bases: one magnet, centred, is normally plenty for a standard infantry model.

▪ Larger bases: two magnets spaced well apart do a better job than one strong one in the middle. Spacing is what stops a model rocking; raw pull is not.

▪ Top-heavy models: spacing matters even more. A tall model on a single central magnet can pivot on it.

▪ Check base thickness first. A 2.2 mm recess needs a base that can take it. Thinner bases, or ones you do not want to weaken, are better served by our 5 x 1 mm disc.

The honest warning about strong basing magnets

Look at 6 mm for: large bases, heavy display pieces and anything where two 5 mm magnets still are not settling it.

Working with them

Fit the magnet flush or slightly recessed, never proud. A magnet standing even a fraction above the underside of the base makes the model rock, and the rocking is far more annoying than the extra grip is useful. Sink it until it sits level with the surrounding plastic.

The glue joint is the weak point, not the magnet. 470 g will pull a badly seated magnet out of its recess rather than release from the steel. Drill a snug 5 mm hole, wick thin CA down the side walls, and let it cure fully before testing.

Mark the stack before you separate it. Put a dot of permanent marker on one face of the whole stack while it is still assembled. Every magnet then carries the same reference face — essential if you are pairing magnets rather than using steel sheet.

Slide, do not pull. Separating a stack by pulling straight apart takes the full 470 g. Sliding one magnet sideways off takes roughly a seventh of that, and the same trick is how you lift models out of a tray without stressing them.

Keep paint out of the joint. Basecoating the underside of a base with the magnet already fitted adds a layer between magnet and steel. Mask the face, or fit the magnet after painting.

Honest limitations

▪ Heat weakens them permanently. Above roughly 80°C an N42 magnet loses strength and does not recover on cooling. Keep them away from ovens, curing lamps and hot cars.
