✓ If you only buy one size, buy this one. It is the size most 28mm conversions actually need — strong enough that a magnetised arm stays put through a game and a car journey, small enough to sink into a shoulder socket.

What it is

A sintered neodymium (NdFeB) disc, 3 mm across and 2 mm thick, magnetised through its thickness — the poles are the two flat faces, not the edge. Two magnets meet face to face, the join sits flat, and the part seats in the same position every time.

This is the size that does most of the work in miniature conversion. At 210 g it crosses the threshold where the join stops feeling like a compromise: a plastic or resin arm clicks home positively, holds its pose, and survives being carried in a case without popping off. Below this you are usually managing the weakness of the magnet. At this size you stop thinking about it.

Supplied as loose magnets in a stack, already assembled pole-to-pole. Keep them that way until you are ready to use them — at this strength a scattered pile is genuinely annoying to sort out.

Pull figures are calculated reference values for a clean, flat, direct steel contact with no air gap. Paint, primer, glue layers, curved surfaces and any gap at all will reduce holding force, in some cases substantially. What this size is for

Well suited to: swappable arms, torsos and shoulder assemblies on 28mm miniatures • heavy weapon options and backpacks • interchangeable heads • turrets, hatches and sponsons on model kits • anywhere a lighter magnet has already let you down.

Choose 3 x 1 mm instead when: the part is too thin to take a 2.2 mm recess, or you are magnetising both halves of a shallow joint.

Look at a larger diameter for: vehicle components and larger resin parts (4–5 mm) • magnetised bases and transport trays (5–6 mm). Going one size up in diameter gains far more holding force than chasing a higher grade at the same size.

Working with them

Mark the stack before you separate it. Put a dot of permanent marker on one face of the whole stack while it is still assembled. Every magnet then carries the same reference face, and you can glue with confidence instead of guessing. Reversing one magnet is the single most common way a magnetised part ends up pushing itself off.

At this strength the glue is the weak point, not the magnet. 210 g will happily pull a badly seated magnet out of its hole rather than release the part. Drill a snug 3 mm recess, wick thin CA down the side walls, and let it cure properly before you test the joint.

Slide, do not pull. Separating a stack by pulling straight apart takes the full 210 g. Sliding one magnet sideways off the stack takes roughly a seventh of that and is far less likely to chip the plating.

Check your wall thickness. A 2.2 mm recess on both halves of a joint is 4.4 mm of material gone. On a hollow plastic arm, drill a test piece first.

Keep paint out of the joint. A coat of primer plus two of paint on both mating faces is easily 0.1 mm of gap, and that costs you real holding force. Mask the faces, or fit the magnets after painting.

Honest limitations

▪ Strong enough to damage a weak joint. If the magnet is better anchored than the part around it, something else gives — a thin resin socket can split, and a poorly glued magnet will tear out. Seat them properly.

▪ Still not a basing magnet. 210 g is not the size for holding miniatures to a steel-lined transport tray — look at 5–6 mm for that.

▪ It needs 3 mm of width and 2.2 mm of depth. On slim wrists or thin-walled parts there may simply not be room.

▪ Sideways load is much weaker than straight pull. Around 30 g. Design the joint so the load pulls the faces apart rather than sliding them.

▪ Neodymium is brittle. These are sintered, ceramic-like magnets. At 210 g they snap together hard enough to chip if you let them jump across a gap.

▪ Indoor use. NiCuNi plating resists handling and normal indoor humidity, but it is not a marine or outdoor coating.

▪ Heat weakens them permanently. Above roughly 80°C an N42 magnet loses strength and does not recover on cooling. Keep them away from ovens, curing lamps and hot cars.
