Vintage handpainted original mug with a modern sketch of a nude woman, original design from William Steig, the maker of Shrek.
The one of a kind mug reads, "All I Ask is to be Left Alone" in black on cream, and is signed "Sandy 12/54". This is a reproduction of one of Steig's earliest artworks from his modern cartoon collection "The Lonely Ones" (First Edition published in 1942).
Mug Measurements
5" Height
4" Bottom diameter
This is a unique way to display one of Steig's earliest works. Display in your guest bathroom as a fun treat for visitors.
"William Steig (1907-2003) was a cartoonist, illustrator and author of award-winning books for children, including Shrek!, on which the DreamWorks movies are based. Steig was born in New York City...In 1930, Steig’s work began appearing in The New Yorker, where his drawings have been a popular fixture ever since." - Macmillan
Note: Overall excellent condition for age. The glaze is imperfectly distributed. The inside of the handle feels more worn that the rest of the mug. There is some sticker residue on the bottom. This is being sold as a decorative item only. We currently have another William Steig comic mug in the shop of the same style with a different "Lonely Ones" comic.
