Japanese Hanging Scroll 'Calligraphy on Mount Fuji' KAKEJIKU By Sankai Kokubu MB580

Description

This original Japanese hanging scroll features an expressive two-line calligraphy composed by Sankai Kokubu, centered on the timeless theme of Mount Fuji. Handwritten on paper with bold, flowing brushstrokes, the work combines literary elegance with the powerful visual rhythm characteristic of traditional Japanese calligraphy.

The inscription praises the majestic beauty and enduring spirit of Mount Fuji, Japan's most revered mountain and an enduring symbol of national identity, longevity, perseverance, and spiritual aspiration. The vigorous brushwork varies between powerful, sweeping strokes and delicate, controlled movements, revealing both the calligrapher's technical mastery and personal expression. More than written words, the characters become an artistic composition that embodies the energy and dignity of classical Japanese shodō.

Created during the Showa period, this hanging scroll reflects the long tradition of appreciating poetry and calligraphy as visual art. The harmonious balance between the boldly written text and generous empty space allows the viewer to contemplate both the literary meaning and the expressive beauty of the brushwork. It is ideally suited for display in a study, tea room, library, reception room, or collection of Japanese calligraphy and cultural art.

Accompanied by its original wooden storage box and explanatory document, this hand-written hanging scroll is an excellent acquisition for collectors of Japanese calligraphy, literary works, and traditional Japanese cultural antiques.
