Albumen Cartes de Visite of Seth Kinman by Mathew Brady. Kinman carved a
legendary name for himself on the American frontier, and this early 1864 Brady
CDV captures him in all his untamed glory. Seated and gripping his flintlock
rifle, Kinman wears a full fur coat and his signature feathered cap. Kinman was
an early settler of Humboldt County and a hunter based in Fort Humboldt, a
famous chair maker, and a nationally recognized entertainer. He stood over
6 ft tall and was known for his hunting prowess and his brutality toward
bears and Indian warriors. Kinman claimed to have shot a total of over 800
grizzly bears, and, in a single month, over 50 elk. He was also a hotel keeper,
saloon keeper, and a musician who performed for President Lincoln on a fiddle
made from the skull of a mule. The image was entered into the Library of
Congress in 1864, as noted on the mount, just one year before he would famously
present President Lincoln with one of his infamous elk horn chairs. The image
is a little dark, but not faded. Some chipping on the edges and corners. See
scans for details.
