Today for sale we have a large amber glass patent medicine bottle retaining the original paper label for Carvol Compound Kuemmel Syrup, Concentrated, Non Alcoholic, manufactured by Kremers Urban Co. of Milwaukee. The label lists net contents of 32 fluid ounces and instructs the user to serve in a small glass with cracked ice.
The label artwork is unusually ornate and heraldic in feel. A large ornamental crown sits at the top, flanked by a pair of polar bears facing outward on either side. At the center is an oval medallion holding a coin style emblem with a cross and shield. Around that are a series of round coin like medallions showing classical profile portraits, a laurel wreath, an eagle, and small pastoral vignettes. The overall look has a distinctive old world engraved quality that stands out from typical medicine labels.
The bottle has an unusual form with an octagonal footprint and beveled corners, a tall tapering body, and a short neck with a banded collar. Machine made, most likely dating to the early 1900s, somewhere in the range of 1900 to 1920. The base carries an embossed number 6.
Some of the original syrup contents still remain dried in the bottom of the bottle.
