16mm Original Studio TV Movie Lab Print Odd Reel

A HOLE IN THE HEAD (1959)

Odd Reel #1

Starring Frank Sinatra

Edward G. Robinson

Step into a rare and exciting archive find: the opening approx. 58 minutes (odd reel #1) of a 16 mm color print of the 1959 feature film A Hole in the Head, directed by Frank Capra and starring Frank Sinatra as Tony Manetta, Edward G. Robinson as his older brother Mario, and Van Johnson among the supporting cast. This print offers the initial major portion of the film—setting up characters, conflict, setting, and the key musical number, Sinatra’s Oscar-winning song “High Hopes”.

The screen–captures included show scenes from the early action: Tony in Miami trying to maintain his hotel, the beginnings of his financial trouble, his relationship with his son Ally, and the entry of Mario and his wife Sophie into the story.

In the first reel you’ll see Tony Manetta, a widowed dreamer who moved from New York to Miami Beach with a vision—and now finds himself running the modest “Garden of Eden” hotel, deep in debt and with only 48 hours to raise a large sum or face eviction.

We follow his carefree lifestyle, his son Ally’s disapproval, Tony’s current girlfriend Shirl, and the visit from Mario and Sophie when they come to check on Tony’s stability and on the welfare of Ally. The opening segments establish Mario’s ultimatum: either Tony gets serious and settles down or Mario will take custody of Ally.

You’ll also see the musical spotlight “High Hopes” take place in this portion of the film, a highlight of the movie and an enduring Sinatra performance.

This reel is a must-have for classic film collectors, Sinatra fans, 1950s Hollywood buffs and archival libraries. Even though it’s not the full 120-minute feature, this opening reel holds critical story and performance moments—character introductions, the crisis setup, the emotions and tone of the piece, and the first major musical number. Please note this is a single reel / segment only, not the complete film, and therefore is best suited for display, research, restoration or archiving rather than full theatrical screening. Condition and completeness to be judged based on your photos; this is a rare print offering a valuable slice of the Sinatra-Capra era..

Not many of these EVER turn up so good luck and happy bidding...

This would make an EXCELLENT addition to any film fan's collection...
