16mm Original Studio TV/Movie Lab Print Odd Reel

GOODBYE COLUMBUS (1969)

Odd Reel #1

Starring Richard Benjamin

Ali McGraw

Presented here is Odd Reel #1 of the 1969 Paramount Pictures classic "Goodbye, Columbus," a 51-minute 16mm color sound print. Directed by Larry Peerce and adapted from the celebrated Philip Roth novella, this film is a quintessential piece of late-1960s American cinema. As seen in the opening credits provided in file Noname20.jpg, the film stars Richard Benjamin in his screen debut as Neil Klugman and Ali MacGraw as Brenda Patimkin, a performance for which she won a Golden Globe. This reel captures the sharp, seriocomic essence of the era, focusing on the burgeoning summer romance and cultural friction between a working-class librarian and a wealthy Westchester family.

The narrative arc of this reel features several of the film's most iconic sequences. Key moments captured in this footage include the initial meeting and developing chemistry between Neil and Brenda, such as the intimate scene and the country club pool setting shown in the photos. Further showcase the vibrant cinematography and the film's exploration of 1960s youth culture. The footage also highlights the strong supporting cast, including Jack Klugman as the Patimkin patriarch, Nan Martin as the apprehensive mother, and Michael Meyers as the basketball-obsessed brother, Ron.

Goodbye, Columbus remains a significant cultural touchstone for its honest look at social class, Jewish identity, and changing sexual morals providing a glimpse into the family dynamics and academic themes central to the plot, where Neil’s intellectualism is contrasted against the Patimkins' newly acquired wealth. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, the film was a critical and commercial success that helped launch the careers of its lead actors. This specific reel offers a substantial portion of the movie’s primary setup and development, providing a rare opportunity for collectors to own a physical piece of this influential New Hollywood drama.  This 16mm color sound print serves as an authentic historical artifact for film historians and enthusiasts alike. The total runtime for this odd reel is approximately 51 minutes, representing roughly half of the original 101-minute theatrical presentation. Whether used for study, screening, or as a highlight in a vintage media collection, this reel of Goodbye, Columbus preserves the visual and auditory style that defined a pivotal year in filmmaking.  .
