Japanese Lacquer Set of 10 Dessert Plates 8.15inch Gold Shinobu Fern Meiji Era EE001

Description

This exceptional set consists of 10 matching Wajima lacquer meimei-zara (individual serving plates), beautifully decorated with elegant Shinobu (Japanese fern) maki-e on a deep black lacquer ground. Crafted from wood and finished with traditional Wajima-nuri lacquer, these refined plates were designed for formal hospitality and Japanese tea ceremony gatherings.

Unlike ordinary small dishes used for daily dining, meimei-zara are individual plates prepared for each guest during formal occasions. They are commonly used to present wagashi (Japanese sweets), seasonal confections, and small delicacies during tea ceremonies, kaiseki meals, and special celebrations. The graceful Shinobu fern motif, native to Japan, symbolizes vitality, longevity, and enduring elegance, making these plates both practical and artistically meaningful.

Produced during the Meiji period (1868–1912), this complete set reflects the superb craftsmanship that has made Wajima-nuri one of Japan's most highly respected lacquer traditions. Each plate is meticulously decorated with shimmering gold maki-e against a lustrous black lacquer surface, creating a timeless design that complements both traditional and modern interiors.

These plates have been previously used and display signs of age and handling appropriate for antique lacquerware. Despite normal use, the overall condition remains very good, making this a wonderful addition for collectors, tea ceremony practitioners, or anyone seeking authentic Japanese decorative arts.

Wajima-nuri is one of the representative traditional crafts of Ishikawa Prefecture, renowned worldwide for its exceptional durability, multiple layers of natural lacquer, and exquisite hand-applied maki-e decoration.
