Today for sale we have a fine antique hand woven splint waste basket dating to the early turn of the century. The body is woven from thin flat splints dyed a deep charcoal near green ebony tone that has only deepened with age and use. The rim is finished with a wrapped natural cane or reed binding, hand joined at one point with a tight wrapped splice that is characteristic of serious basket craft from this era. Two decorative rows of accent weaving circle the body near the top and bottom, a hallmark of skilled American folk basket making traditions. The base is a solid oval cut wood panel framed and lashed into the structure, a construction method common in utilitarian and decorative baskets of the period. The interior shows the same tight dark dyed splint weave and the wood bottom shows honest age and use. It measures approximately 14 inches across, 13 inches wide, and 11 inches tall. No maker’s mark. A museum quality example of American hand woven basket craft.
