The Beatles 7 inch 45 RPM record featuring "Slow Down" b/w "Matchbox" on Capitol Records, catalog 5255.
Released in 1964 during Beatlemania, this Capitol single pairs two of the group's strongest rock-and-roll covers. "Slow Down" was written by Larry Williams, whose material was a favorite of the Beatles throughout their club years, while "Matchbox" features a lead vocal by Ringo Starr on the Carl Perkins classic. Original Capitol singles from this period remain highly collectible because they reflect the unique U.S. release history that differed significantly from the British Parlophone catalog.
Collectors particularly enjoy this release because it captures the Beatles paying tribute to the American rock-and-roll artists who shaped their sound. The pairing of a hard-driving Larry Williams rocker with a Carl Perkins rockabilly standard makes this one of the stronger non-album Beatles U.S. singles.
