Item Description

Gibson LES PAUL STANDARD (1988) (no260619)

This 1988 model, which has just arrived, is from a period when the company was returning to its original, more traditional specifications, moving away from the 3-piece maple neck and pancake body specifications of the Norlin era from the 70s to the early 80s.

The body has a maple top and a one-piece mahogany back, the neck is mahogany, and the fingerboard is rosewood. The pickups are an engraved numbered pickup in the front and an HB-L in the rear. The three potentiometers that can be seen are CTS 1988 models.

Two of the tuning pegs have been replaced with the same type of parts. There is a crack in the rear escutcheon, which has been repaired with a patch from the back. Also, there are three screw holes around the end pin, which appear to be from where a Bigsby was previously installed, and these have now been repaired with wood filler. Overall, there are a fair number of minor scratches and scuffs, many buckle marks on the back of the body, and some paint peeling, but there is no major damage, and it is in a condition that allows for tough, worry-free use.

The neck is straight and in good condition, and the truss rod works smoothly. The nut and frets are original. Although the frets are slightly low, they still have enough height to be playable without any problems. The nut width is 42.5mm, and the thin, clean grip provides good playability.

The sound is a thick, tight, and powerful rock sound. Even when distorted, it retains a good definition and articulation, producing an attractive tone with a tight, dry character, rich sustain and clarity, and a pleasant stickiness.
