This vintage faux book box, often referred to as a book safe, trick box, or "bokgömma" in Swedish). It is cleverly crafted from wood to resemble a bound volume.
The spine of the "book" forms the front handle or drawer face. The top and bottom plates mimic the book covers, while the ribbed texture along the side replicates paper pages.
Pulling forward on the spine reveals a hidden drawer used to store valuables, jewellery, letters, or pocket money out of sight.
The top cover features hand-carved details, and the wood displays a rich, aged patina with a warm brown-red finish.
These secret decorative containers were particularly popular across Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries as a novel way to blend storage seamlessly into a home library shelf.
Whilst we cannot date this precisely, we believe it to be a vintage piece of craftsmanship.
In good vintage condition, however please note that there is some scribbling to the inside drawe. See all photos.
