The official National Flag of Canada, featuring a stylized red maple leaf on a white square flanked by two red bars, was adopted on February 15, 1965, following the "Great Flag Debate". It replaced the Canadian Red Ensign, which had been used unofficially since Confederation in 1867. The design was chosen for its modern look, symbolism of unity, and to reflect Canadian sovereignty.
