Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur Dresden (SPD) porcelain peacock figurine.
Potschappel, Saxony, Germany. Early - Mid 20th century.
The Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur Dresden was founded in 1872 by Carl Thieme in Potschappel, near Dresden, and became one of Germany's most respected porcelain manufacturers. The SP Dresden mark, an entwined S and P above the word Dresden, was registered as a trademark in 1902 and remains the factory's identifying mark. All pieces are hand-painted.
A standing peacock modelled perched upon a naturalistic rocky base with grass detailing, the trailing tail extending behind. The plumage painted in polychrome enamels of notable quality, with iridescent blue, green and purple neck and breast, individually detailed scaled body feathers in brown and ochre, and a long trailing tail rendered in greens and yellows with blue-spotted ocelli. The white glazed base is of a finer and more refined character than the factory's standard decorative output.
Backstamp reads 'SP Dresden' in underglaze blue to base. Impressed model number E5186. Additional painted mark '76', possibly a Bossierer (repairer/assembler) or decorator's workshop number.
