Mercantile Marine War Medal (1914-1918), a British bronze campaign medal instituted in July 1919 by the Board of Trade.

Main characteristics

Destination: It rewarded Merchant Navy sailors who had served at sea during the First World War.

Award criteria: It was necessary to have made at least one trip to a specified war or danger zone, or to have accumulated at least six months of sea service between August 4, 1914 and November 11, 1918.

Reverse symbolism: Designed by Harold Stabler, it depicts a merchant steamship sailing on a rough sea. On the right, we see a sinking enemy submarine and a sailboat in the background. The exergue bears the inscription: "FOR WAR SERVICE MERCANTILE MARINE 1914-1918".

Original ribbon: The official ribbon has three horizontal stripes (green, white and red), symbolizing the position lights of a ship (striboard, mast and port)
