Japanese Lacquer Calligraphy Writing Box Suzuri Silver Water Dropper Meiji Era MB482

Description

This is an elegant Japanese suzuribako (writing box) crafted from natural wood and finished in lacquer, decorated with pavilion landscapes, flowers, and butterflies in fine gold makie. Created during the Meiji period, the piece represents a refined example of traditional Japanese lacquer artistry associated with scholarly culture and calligraphy.

The exterior decoration features a picturesque landscape with pavilions set within natural scenery, accompanied by flowering plants and butterflies. Pavilion landscapes symbolize refinement, learning, and the appreciation of nature, while flowers and butterflies represent beauty, prosperity, happiness, and the fleeting elegance of life.

The interior is finished in luxurious nashiji lacquer, creating a shimmering golden surface that complements the intricate gold makie decoration. Included is a silver water dropper (suiteki) designed in the form of a chrysanthemum, one of Japan's most revered floral symbols associated with longevity, nobility, and elegance.

Suzuribako were traditionally used to store writing implements such as inkstones, brushes, and water droppers. Fine examples like this were highly prized by scholars, artists, and members of the educated class, serving as both practical writing accessories and sophisticated works of art.

Created during the Meiji era, this writing box reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic refinement that made Japanese lacquerware internationally admired. The original wooden storage box is included.
