Originally founded as Modern Microfilm Company, Utah Lighthouse Ministry was founded by Jerald and Sandra Tanner. They were both raised in the LDS church and come from prominent Mormon families. Sandra is a great-great-granddaughter of Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon Church while Jerald was the great-great-grandson of John Tanner whose sizeable donation helped build the Kirtland Temple in Ohio. By the time they met as teenagers they had each started questioning Mormon doctrine. Together they left the Mormon church and spent their life together researching and publishing over 40 books about Mormonism through the UTLM, which also provided photocopies and reprints of original Mormon documents to the public. The bookstore officially closed its doors in 2023.
