DESCRIPTION –
This
is a typical PX-purchase souvenir to send to the sweetheart on the Home Front
from the boy in training to go overseas.
The
bright blue front is busy with large Art Deco “speed lines”, words, and images,
including a large “wing and prop”, “U.S.
AIR CORPS”
and “SHEPPARD FIELD”, and a “Sweetheart” poem.
All
images and words are in raised gold/yellow felt (“fuzzy”), making them stand
out from the blue background.
The
images are bright and crisp.
Measurements
–
16
x 16 inches, exclusive of fringe ** ©nasa21 – do not copy **
Reverse
of cover is gray/green cotton and shows some discoloration, which may be old
water stains. Front of cover does not seem to have been affected.
Golden
yellow fringe each edge.
The
material in this pillow cover DOES NOT GLOW
in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) / “black light”.
This indicates pre-WWII to 1950s manufacture of this cover as cotton thread and other materials that do not glow in UV light were used in this era. Modern nylon or similar synthetics DO GLOW in UV light.
The
pillow cover is in VERY GOOD condition,
except as noted above.
Sheppard Field
was established as a United States Army Air Corps training center in October
1941. During World War II, basic and advanced pilot training, mechanics,
technical and flying training for instructors and B-29 Superfortress flight
engineers was conducted there. The base was
deactivated in August 1946 but reactivated in August 1948 as Sheppard Air Force
Base. Located near Wichita Falls, Texas.
This
pillow cover has creases and fold lines. It is NOT a wadded up mess someone
found in a paper bag, trunk, closet, footlocker, or barracks bag.
This
is NOT a “fresh estate sale find”.
This
pillow cover is from my personal collection. Always stored indoors. No musty
odor. No fading. No rips, tears, or holes. All stitching is intact.
Pillow
cover will be folded for shipping.
