Early Portuguese history of wrestling and physical culture, tracing the sport from antiquity to the modern professional ring, and reflecting the surge of popular fascination with organized combat sports at the turn of the twentieth century. The work surveys the development of wrestling from classical antiquity through its emergence as an international spectator sport, with particular attention to European champions and public exhibitions.  Notable wrestlers are depicted in the plates, sometimes in action, and include Georg Hackenschmidt, Paul Pons, Kara Ahmed, Laurent le Beaucairois, and others.

An exceedingly scarce and visually engaging survey of early professional wrestling, documenting the personalities and spectacle that defined the sport’s rise on the international stage prior to World War I.  The only mention of this booklet we find is in the Museu Nacional do Desporto in Lisbon.
