June 18th, 1905 My dear Miss Roads:— I know you think that I am a naughty boy for not keeping my promise I made you on the morning I left Luray, to write and tell you whether or not I could come back to Luray today and take our trip to Stonyman. Well it was not because I forgot to do so but that I have been driving through the country and did not have time to write, of course you knew by this time that I did not get back to Luray, but I am going to write you any way so you will know that I have not forgotten you and to prove to you that I always keep my promises even though I am a little late in doing so sometimes. But you will excuse me this time if I will promise you not to do so again—won’t you? I know you will say that I did not want to come back to Luray today or that I did not try to come, but that will be all right—it is just like you to say such, but you had better not tell me so when I see you again if you don’t want to fight. I am something terrible when I get stirred up, so you had better beware. Wish I could find words to tell you how sorry I am that I can not spend today with you instead of here in Woodstock, but I can not, so you will have to guess. I don’t think that will be a very difficult task for you. I am feeling awfully lonely today, and I long for some one like your self to talk to and help to pass the lonely hours away. Well, my thoughts are of you if I can not be with you. Now I had better stop telling you such nice things on so short acquaintance or you will say that I am a flatterer and a jollier. You may have said this about me before for all I know, but that does not matter so long as I don’t know anything about it. When you have known me longer and been with me more you will change your mind and say that I am not so bad as you thought. Now don’t understand me to mean that I am an angel or anything of that kind for I am not. My motto is enjoy life while you can and get out of it all there is in it. You will always find me very frank and plain spoken, and always ready to give and receive jokes. I had better stop telling you so much about myself or you will give me a bad name. I will let you find out the rest for yourself. I am going from here to Harrisonburg this evening. I had a letter from my boss yesterday evening telling me to go there, so I will have to obey even though it changes my plans for next week. I will return to Woodstock Tuesday morning, Tuesday night I will be at Mt Jackson, Wednesday night at Broadway, Thursday night at Harrisonburg, Friday night at Staunton and Saturday night at Charlottesville and from there I don’t know where I will go—Crazy, I suppose—you think I haven’t got very far to go—don’t you? I wonder what you are doing with your self today. I would love to be with you. I would enjoy my self so much more than being here at the Hotel among strangers. I hope that you will not leave Luray before I get to that place again for I am real anxious to take our trip to Stonyman. I will enjoy making the trip with you so much—of course I will enjoy the rest of the crowd also. Now Miss Roads I did not intend writing you a whole vol., when I began, but I just could not stop. I could write more, but I will not do it for fear that I have tired you to death already. I will bet you will not read half of this before you will burn it up—though time will tell. Now Miss Roads I will appreciate a nice long letter from you more than I can tell you, and I hope that you will consent to write me such a letter and direct it to me at Broadway Va so I will get it next Wednesday night upon my arrival there. Operating Timeline:

Establishment (1875): Mike Geary purchased the lot and opened the three-story brick hotel, which featured a popular bar and dining room.

Destructive Fire & Rebuilding (1900): A major fire in August 1900 gutted the building. The hotel operated out of the neighboring Koontz building while it was being rebuilt.

The "Dry" Era (1907): After the town voted to outlaw alcohol, the Geary's profitable bar was converted into a café.

Renaming (1930s): The Massanutten Military Academy purchased the hotel in the 1930s and renamed it Hotel Woodstock. It continued to serve travelers as well as academy guests and parents. Closure (Post-1950): The hotel officially closed sometime after 1950, as travelers began favoring modern motels over traditional large hotels. Post-Closure & Today Retail Conversion (1968–2019): After the hotel closed, the building was remodeled and became the home of the Walton & Smoot Pharmacy, which operated there for over 50 years until closing in 2019. Status: The building still stands at 109 S. Main Street in downtown Woodstock. There have been recent local rumors and discussions about the possibility of the historic structure being converted back into a hotel.
