Carl R. Grantham, a Wayne County native, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, at the age of 83. Born near Goldsboro on July 31, 1932, he graduated from high school and began farming in Wayne County before joining the U.S. Army in 1953. He served in Korea and, after Officer Candidate School in 1957, held assignments with the 4th Training Regiment at Fort Knox, the 24th Infantry Division in Germany, and as an instructor at Fort Benning on the Davy Crockett Nuclear Weapons System. His tours included service with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam, as well as at Fort Leavenworth, Fort Belvoir, and the Pentagon, where he served as the Middle East action officer for Foreign Military Sales. Grantham earned numerous decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star for valor with four clusters, two Air Medals, and the Combat Infantry Badge, before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1978.
