Key Details of USS Monticello (AP-61)

Original Name: SS Conte Grande, built in Trieste, Italy.

Acquisition: Interned by Brazil at the start of WWII, then purchased by the U.S. in 1942.

Service History: Transported troops to North Africa (Operation Torch) in 1942, served the Pacific and China-Burma-India theaters in 1943–1944, and brought troops to Europe.

Notable Event: In July 1945, she transported 2nd Infantry Division veterans home to New York.

Final Fate: Decommissioned in 1946 and returned to Italy in 1947, returning to service as a passenger ship
