EASTPORT Massachusetts
Maine - six months after issue
The Passamaquoddy Bank
$5 September 1819
Haxby MA-555 G16
Chartered in 1819, the Passamaquoddy Bank of Eastport operated during a brief but pivotal moment in New England history. At the time of issue, Eastport was still part of Massachusetts, and notes such as this were legally authorized under Massachusetts banking law. Just months later, on March 15, 1820, Maine achieved statehood, placing Eastport within the new state’s borders and instantly transforming earlier issues into statehood‑transition artifacts.
Eastport was a thriving maritime and border‑trade center, and the Passamaquoddy Bank supplied much‑needed circulating currency to support regional commerce tied to fishing, shipbuilding, and cross‑border trade with British North America. The bank’s operational life was short, and surviving notes are scarce, particularly higher denominations.
Cataloged as Haxby MA‑555 G16, this $5 note represents a compelling crossover issue—Massachusetts‑issued, Maine‑located, and emblematic of the economic and political realignment of early 19th‑century New England.
