  • Founded in St. Marys, Georgia, the bank was later relocated to Columbus around 1842, under the leadership of John G. Winter, a prominent businessman and Unionist who later became mayor of Columbus.

  • The bank operated from 1841 to 1852, issuing currency and bills of exchange, some payable at Winter’s office in New York—a rare cross-state financial arrangement for the time.

  • It played a key role in facilitating trade and commerce in Georgia’s growing cotton economy, especially in Columbus, which was a major Chattahoochee River port and industrial center.

  • The Bank of St. Mary’s suspended specie payments in 1852, leaving $350,000 in outstanding notes, which led to widespread distrust in its paper currency.
