Founded in St. Marys, Georgia, the bank was later relocated to Columbus around 1842, under the leadership of John G. Winter, a prominent businessman and Unionist who later became mayor of Columbus.
The bank operated from 1841 to 1852, issuing currency and bills of exchange, some payable at Winter’s office in New York—a rare cross-state financial arrangement for the time.
It played a key role in facilitating trade and commerce in Georgia’s growing cotton economy, especially in Columbus, which was a major Chattahoochee River port and industrial center.
The Bank of St. Mary’s suspended specie payments in 1852, leaving $350,000 in outstanding notes, which led to widespread distrust in its paper currency.
