| ~ Ethnic Costume Uzbek Tribe Ikat Chapan (Men's Coat) ~ | |||||||||||
| We were able to obtain an Uzbek ikat garment that we had admired in museums and ethnic costume catalogues! This is a men's coat, an ikat chapan. Speaking of chapans, it is the ethnic costume famously worn by Hamid Karzai, the first president of Afghanistan. (In Turkey, it corresponds to a kaftan.) The outer fabric is warp-ikat, with patterns created on the warp threads. The warp threads are fine silk threads, and the weft threads are sturdy cotton. This is also a feature of old ikat textiles. (It is said that in later periods, both warp and weft threads came to be woven with silk.) Known as adras ikat, among which those decorated with large motifs are called Khan Adras (the king's ikat) and were said to have been obtainable only by special people. Since the temperature drops at night in this region, the coat is lightly padded with cotton. | |||||||||||
