A Heart-Throbbing New Charm of Nerikomi
We've found a wonderful brand!
Saori M Stoneware is the brand of rising ceramic artist Saori Matsushita.
After studying at Musashino Art University, she moved to the suburbs of Seattle, USA, and continues her pottery work there.
Her works using the traditional technique called "Nerikomi" are minimalistic but playful, filled with a charm you've never seen before.
Here is a small porcelain flowerpot shaped like a take-out container.
This shape is often seen in American Chinese food takeout.
It strikes a chord with your long-forgotten girlish heart.
Take a close look. The checkered lines have a delicate quality that feels like your heart is being squeezed.
This pattern is not painted on the surface, but literally kneaded in using the "Nerikomi" technique.
Nerikomi...? Simply put, it's like the Kintarō-ame method, the same as the nostalgic North Carolina candy, a technique where differently colored clays are layered to create patterns.
The cross-section of the layered clay is sliced and stretched into thinner sheets, then assembled as if folding a cardboard box.
You can watch the Nerikomi production process here.
It's an incredibly painstaking process.
That much care and effort give Nerikomi its depth.
There is a random fluctuation different from the drawn pattern, and the way the pattern gently diffuses within the transparency of the porcelain is truly beautiful.
Recommended for small flowers, herbs, cacti, succulents, mini bonsai, and the like♪
* Since it is handmade, there are individual differences in shape and pattern. There may be glaze unevenness, bubbles, roughness, small spots, or slight wobbling. Please order with this understanding.
