The EMD SD40-2, introduced in January 1972, became one of the best-selling diesel locomotives in history with over 4,000 units built through 1986. Powered by a 16-cylinder 645E3C turbocharged diesel producing 3,000 horsepower, the SD40-2 improved on the original SD40 with modernized modular electronic systems, increased reliability, and a longer frame.
