The Pentax SP (Spotmatic) is a 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) film camera introduced by Asahi Optical Co. in the early 1960s.
Key Features:
- M42 Screw Mount: The SP uses the universal M42 lens mount, giving you access to a wide range of lenses from Pentax and other manufacturers.
- Through-the-Lens (TTL) Metering: One of the first cameras to offer TTL metering using a built-in light meter. The SP uses a stop-down metering system, meaning you press a switch to activate the meter and close the aperture to the selected f-stop.
- Mechanical Shutter: Fully mechanical shutter speeds from 1 to 1/1000 sec, plus Bulb mode. It doesn’t need batteries to operate the shutter—only for the light meter.
- Solid Build: Metal body with a satisfying weight and durability. It feels like it could survive a tumble down a forest path (though I wouldn’t recommend testing that!).
