Today’s
offering showcases this very interesting and elegant Daniel Stieger
limited edition regulator watch from our Connoisseur of Time Celebrity
Collection, owned and worn by legendary musician Don McLean.
Best
known as the writer and performer of American Pie, McLean
was one of the clear enduring and culturally significant American
singer-songwriters of the twentieth century. Thoughtful rather than
showy, this Daniel Steiger "Generation" regulator watchreflects
an appreciation for time as something to be observed and experienced,
not rushed - an outlook that closely parallels McLean’s own
reflective, narrative-driven artistry.
Don McLean’s
place in American cultural history is firmly secured by his 1971
epic American Pie, a song that has transcended popular
music to become a generational touchstone. Frequently cited among
the greatest songs of all time, it is studied, debated, and endlessly
referenced for its poetic encapsulation of social change, musical
history, and collective memory. Few works in American songwriting
have achieved the same combination of commercial success, cultural
penetration, and lasting interpretive depth.
Beyond that singular achievement, McLean sustained a long and
respected career as a recording artist and performer. His catalog
includes acclaimed albums such as American Pie, Don McLean, and
Homeless Brother, and he scored multiple international hits, including
his chart-topping rendition of Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)
- a song that introduced millions to the emotional power of Van
Gogh’s life and work through music. Across decades of touring,
McLean built a reputation as a deeply committed performer and
storyteller, earning admiration from peers, critics, and audiences
worldwide.
In recognition of his lasting contributions, McLean was inducted
into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a distinction reserved for
writers whose work has shaped the fabric of American music. His
songs have been covered by countless artists across genres, and
his influence can be felt well beyond the folk revival era from
which he emerged. McLean’s career represents not just success,
but endurance - a body of work that continues to resonate long
after its initial release.
This watch
is not a commemorative object or stage accessory, but a personal
wristwatch of Mr. McLeans.
This watch:
This Daniel Steiger limited edition “Generation” is
a watch that quietly reveals its sophistication the longer you spend
with it. At first glance it reads as clean and classically styled,
but then the eye begins to understand its regulator-style layout
- an arrangement historically associated with precision timekeeping
in observatories. The large central hand tracks the minutes, while
the hours are displayed on a dedicated subdial at 12 o’clock
and the running seconds occupy their own register at 6, paired with
a discreet date aperture. It’s a format that invites interaction,
slowing you down just enough to appreciate time rather than simply
read it.
The
design is balanced and thoughtful, with crisp printing, a sector-style
minute track, and warm rose gold-tone hands that complement the
case beautifully. Turn the watch over and the exhibition case back
reveals a mechanical movement whose bridges are finished with decorative
striping.
This
watch is marked number 85 of the limited edition.
It
remains in excellent condition. We have not cleaned or polished
the watch or done anything to the outside of it - we left it just
as we acquired it with dirt and signs of Mr. McLean's wear.
We have timed
and tested it and performed any needed internal servicing - it is
running strong and true, keeping very accurate time.
Included
with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on
the movement and its function, a full-page custom printed Connoisseur
of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
Also
accompanying it is a Certificate of Authenticity and Provenance
