The EMD F7 is a 1,500 horsepower diesel locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1949 and 1953, representing the pinnacle of passenger and freight service cab units. The F7 was EMD's fourth model in the prestigious line of F-unit locomotives and became by far the best-selling cab unit of all time. This iconic diesel locomotive primarily differed from the F3 in internal equipment, but featured noticeable external changes such as redesigned grills and dynamic brake hatches. F7 locomotives operated successfully in both passenger and freight service across major American railroads, with many examples remaining in service for decades.
