This infantry tank was developed towards the end of World War II.
It was an enlarged version of the Churchill infantry tank, equipped with a 17-pounder gun.
Like an infantry tank, it was designed to sacrifice speed for heavy armor and the ability to maneuver on rough terrain. However, by the time it was completed, combat lessons had led to an emphasis on speed. The Centurion, completed earlier, combined defensive strength with speed and had the same gun, so production of this tank was halted after six prototypes were completed.
