An original Civil War CDV (carte de visite) of Union Major General George Meade, Published by E. & H.T. Anthony of New York from a Mathew Brady negative. Likely 1860-70s era. It features a portrait of the Gettysburg commander. He was appointed to command the Army of the Potomac just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg and arrived on the battlefield after the first day's action on July 1, 1863. Eventually, Meade's cautious approach prompted Lincoln to look for a new commander of the Army of the Potomac. These authentic, small portrait photographs usually show Meade in uniform and feature a 501 Broadway, N.Y. back mark. Includes an orange 2 cent proprietary revenue stamp. Some light foxing on the image and pencil text under the image.
