Antique c.1880s-1900 wooden serving tray featuring a large compass star inlay composed of contrasting light and dark geometric pieces set into a mahogany panel. The rectangular tray is framed with ebonized hardwood rails supported by squared corner blocks, with turned rod handles running along the long sides. The surface displays a bold eight point compass star at the center with smaller star motifs on each side, surrounded by a geometric border. Construction consists of a solid mahogany panel mounted within the frame with screws visible from the underside.
Trays of this type are commonly described as sailor made or whaler made, referencing the maritime compass star motif and traditional inlay decoration.
Condition shows age and use throughout. The surface displays scratches, finish wear, and scattered marks consistent with use. The inlay remains intact with expected age toning, with minor gaps and a small swell near the center (pictured). The underside shows wear and surface marks from use and storage. Please see pictures.
