An original programme for the Lower Broughton First Grand Athletic Festival, which took place on 9 May 1885 at the Bicycle Track, Great Clowes Street.
There are a range of athletics events for youths and adults, together with a bicycle handicap race.
All the contestants are named together with their club, and of particular interest is A Thompson of Newton Heath Football Club, who ran in the 200 yards. This may be one of the earliest mentions in a programme of a Newton Heath player - the club which later became Manchester United.
The handicapper was JH Hardwick, a key figure in north-west athletics and a founder of Salford Harriers.
Eight pages. Has been folded with small edge tears and some annotations, but generally in good condition for its age and probably a unique survivor.
Lower Broughton is in Salford, part of Greater Manchester.
