Turkey’s blue evil-eye amulet “Nazar Bonjuk.” This is a traditional type with a hand-braided hemp cord and beads. In Turkey, it is believed that misfortune can be brought on by a malicious gaze (the “evil eye”), so an eye motif is used as an amulet to ward off and repel such looks. It is also said to be a remnant of Medusa worship—the belief that Medusa could turn anyone she looked at into stone. This is a protective charm that has been passed down since before the Common Era. *The braiding pattern of the hemp cord may vary. *Each eye piece is handmade by artisans by layering glass. Therefore, there may be variations in size and in how the eye pattern appears. |
