Dating to the
early 1900s, this French faïence (tin glazed earthenware) tulipière or tulip
vase has the coat of arms of Granville on the front.
This vase has a white ground with hand painted motifs having
colors of cobalt blue, yellow, orange, pale blue, brown, and pale olive green. This
stunning antique French tulipière will be wonderful on its own or filled with
fresh or dried flowers.
The vase is marked on the bottom: ‘Granville’, ‘GM’ (Géo
Martel), and ‘2662’.
The Géo Martel faïence
In 1900, Georges Martel, known as "Géo Martel"
(1872-1942), bought from Gaëtan Level a ceramics factory located in Desvres,
specializing in the reproduction of old pieces (Rouen, Delft, Nevers).
The First World War brought an end to the production of earthenware, as most of the staff as well as Georges Martel himself were mobilized. It was not until the intervention of Madame Martel-Legrand in the course of 1916 that the factory was put back into operation.
