This certificate represents the Metropolitan Rail Road Company of Boston, which was the largest and most influential street railway in the region during the mid-to-late 19th century.
Historical Prominence
Founded: The company was chartered on May 21, 1853, to provide service between downtown Boston and the then-independent town of Roxbury.
Expansion: Over three decades, it expanded into a massive network covering over 90 miles of track, serving neighborhoods including Dorchester, Brookline, and East Boston. By its peak in 1887, it was carrying over 42 million passengers annually.
Leadership: Its most notable figure was Calvin A. Richards, who served as president from 1874 until 1887. His management transformed the company from a period of poor performance into a highly profitable enterprise. The "Horsecar" Era & Vignette The Vignette: The central illustration depicts a typical horse-drawn streetcar (horsecar) of the era, labeled "METROPOLITAN R.R.". Scale of Operations: By 1887, the Metropolitan Railroad was using 3,600 horses to operate its fleet of 700 cars. Technological Transition: These horsecars were the precursor to electric streetcars. Because horses were expensive to feed and maintain—consuming about 30 pounds of hay per day—the industry eventually sought electrification to increase efficiency. The 1887 Consolidation Final Years: In the mid-1880s, fierce competition and "bloated fares" among Boston's many transit companies led the state legislature to mandate a merger. Absorption: On November 12, 1887, the Metropolitan Rail Road was consolidated into the West End Street Railway, which then became one of the largest street rail operations in America. The "CANCELLED" Stamp: The "CANCELLED" ink stamp on this certificate likely indicates it was retired or rendered void during this massive consolidation.
