Authentic Hand-Crafted Narugo Kokeshi by Master Craftsman Akinori Ito

This is a beautiful, large-scale traditional (Dento) kokeshi doll handmade in the famous Narugo style of Miyagi Prefecture. It is a genuine piece of Japanese folk art, featuring the signature of the renowned artist Akinori Ito on the base.

UNIQUE INSCRIPTION: The back of the doll features a hand-painted formal inscription noting it was a commemorative gift for a training seminar held in Hannō City in February 1991. This provides a rare, verified date of production for this specific piece.

This type of inscription is common for high-quality, authentic Dento (traditional) kokeshi. It proves the doll was purchased directly from the artist's studio for a formal event, which collectors often view as a sign of guaranteed authenticity.

DESIGN DETAILS:

BODY: Features the classic Narugo "layered chrysanthemum" (kasane-giku) motif hand-painted in vibrant red and black.

FACE: Painted with the traditional Narugo expression—refined features, a high forehead, and the distinct central topknot.

CONSTRUCTION: Carved from a single piece of wood with a stable 7.5cm base. The head is inset in the traditional Narugo fashion (which often produces a signature "squeak" when turned).

Unlike the smaller 18 cm souvenir dolls often found from this era, this is a full-scale 30 cm (12 inch) display piece, likely crafted in the mid-Showa period (1960s–1970s) for a traditional Japanese home alcove (tokonoma).

CONDITION:

Excellent vintage condition. The wood has developed a lovely warm golden patina over time. The painted details remain crisp and vibrant with minimal fading. (Please refer to high-resolution photos for exact condition).
