2:1 lacing is not for novice wheel builders. It requires rims that centre drilled (nipple bed and tape bed) or drilled for 2:1 lacing. The 2:1 spoke lacing pattern allows two spokes to carry out the function of one, slackening and torsion are limited and power transfer from the rider is much more effective.
Additionally with the 2:1 lacing pattern spoke tensions are balanced more evenly between drive and non-drive sides of the wheel and the fatigue life of the rim, hub and spokes is lengthened.
The performance result is a 17% increase in stiffness over classic spoke lacing patterns and a much more responsive durable wheel.
