GUILD D-55 NT 1978 (1978) (no260307)

The flagship "D-55" model first hit the market as a custom-made model in 1968 and became a regular model in 1976. It gained popularity in the 1960s when Tommy Smothers of the Smothers Brothers Show played it, and artists like Waylon Jennings, Billie Joe Armstrong, and David Nail used it, making it a world-renowned and sought-after model for decades. This particular guitar dates from the 1978s, relatively early in the series' production run. It features a spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, engraved original gold Schaller tuning machines, pearl and abalone fingerboard inlays, original pickguard, non-scalloped X-bracing, and a natural finish. Its rugged sound complements hard-hitting strokes, but as a premium Guild model, it also has a supple tone and rich overtones, making it a rich, playable guitar. Founded in 1952, Guild Guitars are highly recommended by artists and are used by many musicians both in Japan and abroad. There are guard cracks on the upper left side of the pickguard near the neck and on the inside of the lower left side of the pickguard, but they have been repaired and are visible upon closer inspection, but do not affect playability. There is a 3cm crack repair mark on the side of the first string, but it does not penetrate deep into the instrument and has been repaired. There are signs of a rod-shaped object being pressed against the back of the guitar, causing some deformation of the finish, but this is also superficial and does not affect playability. Due to its age, there are some dents and small dings on the finish, but there is little thinning and the finish is in good condition with a thick texture. There is also some paint peeling on the back of the neck due to aging, which is inevitable for a guitar of this age, but it does not cause any discomfort when touched. Picking wear around the soundhole indicates this instrument has been well-used. This guitar features a slightly folky playability characteristic of the era and a powerful, full-bodied sound.
The neck is in excellent condition.
The "D55" is becoming increasingly rare these days, so be sure to consider this one soon.
