This is a vintage undivided back postcard, unposted and featuring a view of the Angel of Grief Memorial on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The statuary is an 1894 sculpture by William Wetmore Story for the grave of his wife in Rome, Italy. A replica of the sculpture was installed at the Henry Lathrop monument at the Stanford University Arboretum in 1901. Lathrop was the brother of Jane Stanford, co-founder of the University. The Memorial pictured here was badly damaged in the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake in 1906 and replaced in 1908. Postcard published circa 1901-1907.
