A like new example of the Bulova MIL-SHIPS-W-2181 (model# 98A265) from the archive series. Featuring a 41mm bead blasted satin grey case, double domed sapphire crystal, commemorative helmet medallion back with serial number engraving, and Swiss made SW200 automatic movement. The watch is loaded with history, quirkiness, a exclusivity. First, it was based on a prototype that was never commercially launched, but is a widely known design which in the 1950s was an approved MIL-SPEC design that the U.S. Navy needed and Bulova was an approved manufacturer for with this model. The double domed sapphire which is period correct, is exaggerated and will provide a deep water like view of the matt black dial. Another carryover feature from the protype is that it has a unique paper strip on the dial that indicates if moisture has entered the watch.
The vintage touches are undeniable with the one of a kind captive bezel that will need to be pressed and can be turned bi-directionally, then locked in once released. The bezel and dial have vintage lume throughout, and matt black finishing. Screw down guard less crown perfectly mimics the 50's design and the closed back medallion with vintage helmet design is very detailed. The most quirky feature of course is the 16mm narrow nylon strap that actually feels great on the wrist. The only NATO I found comfortable and actually enjoyed wearing.
This is the LIMITED EDITION version which as the Swiss automatic movement, darker, thicker and multilayered or multiwoven Nato strap, Swiss made designation on the dial, a more detailed caseback with serial number out of 1000. The fact that it was only produced in a very limited series of only 1000 watches truly makes this watch a collector worth piece that also happens to be an absolute joy to wear.
This example is Like New purchased in 2024 before it was sold out, it was just tried on a few times mostly in the home. I cannot find the box, booklets, or packaging so it will be sold with the watch, original tag, and nice blue travel case I will include. Sold out at Bulova retailers and website - this was a Limited Production and is no longer available. Bulova will no longer produce this watch with the Swiss movement. Retailed at $2090. It is ready to wind and wear.
