Description
I am happy to offer from my private collection this amazing antique Breguet à Paris Silver Quarter Repeater Pocket Watch c1770's,specially made for the French Royal Court of Empress Marie Antoinette.
For the serious horology collector, this is an exceptional example of a Quarter Repeating pocket watch. Combining technical complexity with historical artistry, this timepiece features a beautifully preserved movement and a highly detailed commemorative case.
The Complication (Quarter Repeater): This is not a standard pocket watch. It features a Quarter Repeating mechanism, which, when activated (typically by depressing the pendant/stem), strikes a sequence of crisp tones on internal gongs to announce the time.
-
Example: At 4:40, the watch will strike 4 low tones (hours) and 2 high/low double-tones (representing two 15-minute quarters).
-
Status: Confirmed in perfect working order, a rarity for repeaters of this age.
The Case & Dial:
-
Aesthetic: The back of the heavy silver case features a striking relief engraving of Empress Marie Antoinette.
-
Size: At 56mm and 110 grams, this is a substantial "Grand" size watch that feels impressive in the hand.
-
Dial: featuring a silver engine-turned dial with a sunburst center and elegant blued steel hands.
The Movement: The internal movement is a work of art, featuring a hand-pierced balance bridge and meticulous engraving across the plates. It is signed "Breguet à Paris No. 4774" on the dust cover.

-
Mechanical: Exceptional. The repeating mechanism chimes clearly and accurately. The watch keeps good time for a verge movement.
