The Artist & Heritage
Mazan (本名: Eiso Terahata, born 1937) is a renowned potter, with his kiln known as Terahata Touen. He is one of the few artists in Seto who continues to produce traditional bonsai pots. Around 1985, he transitioned to crafting handmade pots, diligently pursuing unique clay blends and glazes. His signature is an original clay mixture, primarily composed of highly refractory Seto clay, blended with Tokoname and Chinese clays. Mazan's distinctive pots are fired at an exceptionally high temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius, which is rare for pottery. This process yields remarkably durable pots that are resistant to frost cracking, highly breathable, and foster excellent root development. He is a versatile artist, creating everything from small to large pots, including unglazed (doromono) and glazed varieties, and remains one of the few contemporary potters capable of crafting large pieces exceeding 60 cm.
Aesthetics
This unglazed (泥物 - doromono) oval pot exemplifies the natural beauty of Mazan's unique clay blend. Its earthy brown tone and simple, elegant oval form beautifully highlight the authentic character of the material. The high-temperature firing imbues it with exceptional durability and breathability, making it an ideal environment for healthy bonsai growth while offering a rustic and timeless aesthetic.
