We were lucky enough to find another RARE CUSHMAN COLONIAL CREATIONS Gem. This time it’s a wonderful “CHESTER” SIDE or END TABLE (serial # 2106), but would work just as well as a nightstand. Sometimes referred to as a HEART TABLE because of the heart shape cut-outs on either side. Such an odd, but captivating design combining a half-round table with a cubby and second tier shelf, supported by THREE legs. It is quality crafted in maple with Cushman’s trademark soft, rounded edges and that ORIGINAL warm MCM red-brown finish.
It can be revealed by the serial number (#2106) and the laminated celluloid/paper oval tag, that this model/design was introduced in 1942 and this particular table dates to the period of 1942-1945 (see notes below).
The condition is VERY GOOD and ORIGINAL with no significant damage or flaws. But it does have normal wear and signs of use typical for a used but un-abused piece of furniture that is 80 plus years old. It is mostly clean with a nice, original warm Cushman finish. It has a modest share of minor dents & dings, scuffs and scratches, as well as soiling settled in corners & crevasses. Some specks of white paint (tiny and few) might also be noticed. The finish is lightly worn in some small areas as well. There are a couple small, shallow gouges and a scratch on the back, left leg, one is on the front of it and a smaller one on the back of it near the foot (see last few photos).
It is sturdy and strong, the slightest movement of the legs if toggled by hand. Probably not worth mentioning. That’s about it. All pretty normal and nothing egregious. It is just as I acquired it and beyond a damp cloth and soft buffing I did not clean or wax it.
An early, rare and interesting Mid Century piece for the Cushman aficionado’s and a very cool table for anyone. Being offered as is- as found.
It is marked and labeled on the base as seen in the photos.

ABOUT CUSHMAN COLONIAL CREATIONS
Also well known for their earlier ashtrays and smoking stands, Cushman introduced their “Colonial Creations” in 1933 as a broad line of fine, quality furniture inspired by Pioneer and Colonial Revival styles of the 19th century but uniquely blended with modern aesthetics. Its distinctive looks and appeal were very popular for almost 30 years and now fueling collector and decorator interest today. The Cushman Colonial styling and beautiful warm finishes were heavily copied by other furniture companies but never really duplicated.
Cushman was sold to General Industries in 1964, who again sold it to the Green Mountain Furniture Co. in 1971. Green Mountain went out of business in 1980.
NOTES ON DATING THIS TABLE
The following information was compiled, extrapolated and composed from various sources
• Cushman introduced the Colonial Creations line of furniture styles in 1933. A RECTANGULAR shaped, brass tag bearing the “Cushman Colonial Creation” name and a number (possibly in various formats) was used to label and identify the furniture until 1942. The first digit of the number represents the year that any particular model-style was introduced (eg: 5 = 1935 or 45, 55 etc.). Which is, to say, the first number isn’t necessarily the year that particular piece was made, but would, at least, be the year that that style or model was introduced to the Cushman Colonial Creations line. Some models/styles were made for many years and others made for only a few, but all pieces of that model/style would be marked or labeled with that same first number of introduction regardless of the date/year that the individual item in question was actually made.
It seems that during this period some items may have had other numbers or info stamped or burnt into the wood near the metal tag as well. Any other numbers may or may not be different than the number on the tag. Perhaps indicating a style, finish, factory, wholesaler or catalog number, etc.
In *1942, when wartime restrictions on the usage of metals were imposed on American industries, the tag was re-designed in the shape of an OVAL and was made of celluloid (a plastic) that was laminated on paper, embossed and colored to look like brass. It still bore the “Cushman Colonial Creations” name, but the serial numbers, however, were now burnt or stamped into the wood only, and no longer on the tag as was previously done. They continued to use the same “first number” introduction date format.
After the war, in *1945 or 1946, restrictions on metal usage were lifted and brass was once again used to make the tags, but keeping the new oval shape. This oval label was still in use when the company was sold in 1964. The New owners continued using them, but the wording was now changed to to say merely “Cushman Colonial” with a larger, fancy “C”.
*I do not know if there was an overlap in 1942 and 1945 between the brass and celluloid tag styles.
My research ends there. I do not know when (or if) the oval tags ever ceased to be used. Nor do I know if the remaining furniture styles previously offered in the Colonial Creations line were continued, re-issued, updated, etc. by the new owners, or if new styles were added, deleted or re-introduced. Finally, I do not know when the Colonial Creations line, itself, actually came to an end.
SO, this table is a #2106. The style was therefore introduced in year ending in “2”. Colonial Creations began in 1933. Leaving the possibilities of 1942, 52 or 62 for a date of introduction and subsequent manufacture. The oval tags were introduced in 1942 (still leaving open the previous possible dates, however, the celluloid tags were only used during the war. Meaning that not only was the style introduced in 1942, but this particular table was manufactured sometime from 1942 to 1945. Hence, my approximate estimate of 1943 for the date of this table.

opportunity and current circumstances. Travel incurred over 30 miles (round trip) may
require a fuel and/or milage charge.
MEETINGS shall be MUTUALLY convenient, and must be completed within 10 DAYS
after the date of the sale. We will reserve the right to take the most convenient route to
a meeting place (which may not always be the shortest route), or decline such an
arrangement altogether.
If a MEET-UP is desired we MUST be contacted BEFORE a purchase is made

the Vehicle or the Item, and does not pose a safety hazard for the operation of the
