***1 C-Shaped hardened sparking steel striker at 3 1/2 inches in length. I consider this a four finger striker.
***5 large pieces of Pure black charred cloth made from thick 9 ounce denim. Large enough to cut in half if desired. This char can be folded in half without breaking since it isn't brittle and will catch a spark anywhere on its surface.
***Several pieces of birch bark to conveniently protect that char cloth during shipping, use this to extend a small flame as it burns even when damp due to its natural oils. This bark is great!
***1 larger or 2 smaller hard English flint rocks (depends what I have in stock) inside the tin, plus 1 extra flint that stores in the bag. (In my opinion it's the best in the world for flint and steel sets.
*** One Ranger band made from a bicycle tire that helps keeps the tin closed. Can also be used to extend a small flame.
*** Three pieces of 5/16" Manila rope tinder that is not oily smelling to me, and 4 to 6 jute rope pieces of 4 ply 1/4" diameter (easy to fluff up) for one to convert to several birds like nests. I teach students to use 2 nests for a very, very high success rate consisting of a small jute nest in the middle and a manila rope nest using approx. 10 inches of 5/16" diameter manila. The jute has very fine angel hair like properties and the manila has thicker fibers which will burn longer giving one more time to place a burning nest into a firelay. Once the char has a spark, place it into the center and fold the nest like a taco without smothering the char since all those 3 items need some air. Some younger ones like to use a little birchbark to protect their hands from the heat while trying to get the nest to burst into a flame.
*** The tin is also tied in a decorative bow of 3 ply jute twine.
*** 1 thick 4 ply reusable plastic zip lock bag.
***1 hinged metal tin 3.75 inches X 2.5 inches

The steel in this set can be used to sharpen dull flint as it features a built in flint sharpener. This is a unique feature in the steel as described in the directions that only my product can claim as such a process. All flint and steel sets work best with sharp flint rock and one can achieve this with my set. There are other ways to sharpen flint such as using a deer antler, a copper billet, or a small hammer to just chip off small portions of the flints edge. But if you are out in the woods and your flint is dull one can sharpen the flints edge right on the spot without looking for any tools found in the wilderness. I think it's kind of a handy feature for those that like easy big sparks.
Sets are hand made in the USA with thousands sold! Each steel is tested for spark.
This is a fun way to start a campfire the primitive way. Each kit contains all the materials to get a fire started. These kits make excellent gifts and have handsome packaging.
(I consider all the items in this kit to be of high quality and I try to pack the tins full making Vern's Flint and Steel the go to fire starting kit)
