Built in 1928 as a private,
luxurious athletic and social club, featuring amenities like 96 bedrooms, a
gymnasium, a swimming pool, solariums, handball
courts, multiple dining rooms and a big lounge area.
There
was even a separate dining room and lounge just for women. Women also had their
own special entrance on A. Street.
When
the club first opened at
1250 6th Avenue, it was a huge
event. They held dinner-dances and open houses for members and their guests.
More than 10,000 people came to see the new club.
City police, on November 13,1935, raided the San Diego Club.
The police gathered up slot machines, roulette wheels, and Club “script.”
Gamblers escorted out by police included a former city councilman, a county
grand juror, and several prominent businessmen.
The club closed in the
mid-1960s.
