Union Pacific "Big Boy" locomotive, specifically number 4016, one of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built. Twenty-five "Big Boy" locomotives were commissioned exclusively for the Union Pacific Railroad, primarily to haul heavy freight over the Wasatch Mountains between Utah and Wyoming. The locomotives are massive, measuring 133 feet long and weighing approximately 1.2 million pounds. Due to their great length, the frames of the "Big Boys" are "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They were in service from the early 1940s until 1959, when they were replaced by diesel-electric locomotives. Of the eight remaining "Big Boys" in existence today, only No. 4014 is operational; the rest are preserved in museums across the United States.
